The 2003 Youth Service California Forum, Sustaining Service Leaders, will be held on Friday, November 21, at Preservation Park in Oakland. The program will feature Marian David (South Carolina) and Pam Toole (Minnesota) from Sustaining the Soul that Serves, an organization built on the wisdom of Mother Teresa: "To keep a lamp burning, we to keep putting oil on it." This Forum seeks to help service leaders sustain and renew themselves so that they can invigorate their organizational efforts to promote social justice and youth empowerment. Info


State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell has announced that the California Department of Education (CDE) has been awarded a $2,593,052 Learn and Serve America grant. The award is to support local educational partnerships and regional service-learning networks for training California teachers and service-learning coordinators who incorporate service into academic settings.


The Corporation for National and Community Service announces the availability of approximately $4,000,000 to award Next Generation Grants to eligible nonprofit organizations. These grants will fund innovative strategies to effectively engage volunteers in service organizations by providing seed money to plan and implement new service programs that have the potential of becoming national in scope.
