Training and Technical Assistance

There are many avenues for receiving training and technical assistance in service-learning in California.

If you have questions about service-learning resources or concepts, YSCal provides free informal advice via phone and e-mail. If your school, district or organization is interested in beginning, improving or expanding a service-learning program, YSCal provides a range of fee-based services.

In addition to designing custom training materials and workshops for your school or program, we offer:

An introduction to high quality service-learning workshop for school or afterschool program staff. YSCal will follow up the workshop by providing direct support to teachers and staff and will convene periodic meetings onsite to discuss challenges and share results.

Training for advanced service-learning practitioners. Our workshops include:

  • Evaluation
  • Reflection
  • Portraiture Writing
  • Connecting with the Community
  • Service-Learning & Academic Standards
  • Youth Voice
  • Civic Engagement
  • Facilitative Leadership
  • Appreciative Inquiry
  • Asset mapping
  • Long-range program planning

A two- or three-day summer institute for teams of teachers or afterschool staff who want to learn about service-learning and design a project. YSCal will arrange for ongoing support to participants.

In partnership with California Department of Education’s CalServe Initiative, we also certify service-learning trainers who are available to:

  • Lead workshops and institutes in your school/district/region to expand knowledge of high quality service-learning and to provide practical guidance for service-learning projects.
  • Serve as advisors to your local or regional program.
  • Work with you and your Regional Lead to design and develop a comprehensive regional professional development plan.
  • Help you and your Regional Lead develop connections with other organizations involved in youth service and education.
