Position Description

AmeriCorps*VISTA Members serving with the Cesar E. Chavez Service Clubs are a great tool for creating the sustainable systems and practices necessary for the long-term viability of the Service Clubs.  Cesar E. Chavez Service Clubs are established in middle schools throughout California from San Diego to Humboldt County.  Each VISTA member will work full-time for one year and will work with these Service Clubs, so that Service Club students will have appropriate places and resources to perform meaningful, effective, and sustainable service in their communities.  VISTA Members will advocate for the Service Clubs, work with Service Club staff and community partners to develop service projects, and plan for the long-term sustainability of the Service Clubs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Help the Service Clubs to define their own goals for the school and community and then design strategies to fulfill that role.
  • Create relationships in the school and community that will support, guide, and sustain the Service Clubs.
  • Insure that the program and services the Service Clubs provide are high-quality, effective, and sustainable.
  • Create the internal processes that will allow the Service Clubs to be fully integrated with and effective within the school or district community.
  • Ensure that the Service Clubs have the financial, material, and human resources necessary to achieve their goals in the school and community for the long term.
  • Help the Service Clubs to successfully self-govern and become leaders in the school and community.

The specific tasks and timeframes for each task will be determined by the nature of the individual Service Club, school, and community.  However, some examples of appropriate tasks might include:  developing a three-year plan for Service Club sustainability, creating a Community Advisory Council, developing a series of high-quality and sustainable service projects, integrating members of the Service Club into the school’s governing board, starting a yearly fundraising donor program for the Service Clubs, and establishing student voice in the direction of the afterschool program.
