Our Reach | |
The Cesar E. Chavez Service Club initiative is a
state-funded effort to engage middle school students through their
schools in community service and learning that honors the life and work
of Cesar E. Chavez. There are currently 66 Service Clubs in middle
schools around the state, and over 1,500 youth have been involved in the program. More than 6,000 community volunteers have given 35,000 hours of their time with the Clubs' service projects. As a measure to
increase sustainability for the Service Clubs, a 53-member
AmeriCorps*VISTA project has been awarded to Youth Service California,
leveraging over $800,000 in federal funds.
In commemoration of Cesar Chavez Day 2007 and 2008, a combined total of
18 playgrounds and 2 skate parks were built in a single day in
communities throughout California. These Legacy Projects have provided
a safe and healthy place to play for tens of thousands of California
youth and have engaged approximately two thousand volunteers in service.
Countless more communities have been impacted through the development
of standardized Cesar Chavez Day educational materials, including
posters and bookmarks, which are distributed to K-12 schools throughout
the state.
