10-Month Curriculum | Cesar E. Chavez lived his life by 10 Core Values. Members of Cesar’s family, together with the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation, have identified the Core Values by the way he carried out his work. The Cesar E. Chavez Service Club curriculum is divided into 10 Units. Each unit is centered around one of Cesar Chavez’ 10 Core Values. In each month, there are nine Sessions, defined as a one-hour afterschool Service Club meeting. When surveying the Service Clubs at the end of the 2006–2007 school year, we found that many of the Service Clubs are only able to meet for an hour each day because of other requirements for afterschool programming. In learning about the average number of hours spent in an afterschool meeting, we developed these materials to be used by all the Service Clubs, but following the common hour time schedule. In some cases, a Session may not add up to 60 minutes. In these rare cases, we felt the need to leave the extra minutes for Activities that run longer and/or allow for additional reflection time.
We have developed the Units with the intention that these nine Sessions will be spread out over a month’s time. The Sessions were written with the intention that they would be facilitated in order from 1-9. There are two months that will fall short of having nine Sessions: December and June. Both of these months typically are cut short by the Holiday season and graduation/summer break, respectively. With nine curriculum Sessions per month, Service Clubs will have meetings beyond the curriculum provided. This was planned intentionally so that Service Clubs would have meeting time built-in to plan and conduct their service projects and reflection.
We are aware that the structure of every afterschool program is different. Above all, this curriculum is meant as a guide, not as a cookie cutter approach. It is our belief that every school and every community has its own unique assets, needs and challenges. Please adapt this curriculum to fit the needs of your students, school and community.
