Board of Directors | Michael Boyer is Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer, ELEMENTS. He was the CEO and Senior Consultant of the Pismo Group, Inc. where he drove customer relationships. Michael studied business and communications at the University of Oregon, and is currently active in many industry, community service and non-profit organizations including a board position with the Rotary Club of Pismo Beach, a board position and member with the Grover Beach Chamber of Commerce, Endowment Committee with the Clark Center Foundation, Technology Advocacy Committee and member of the San Luis Obispo Chamber, PMI, the Web Analytics Association, the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce and of Softec.
Valerie Chan (Treasurer) is a student at the University of California, Berkeley. She has served as an Alternative Break Leader and is currently the Development Coordinator of the Alternative Breaks program at the Cal Corps Public Service Center on campus. Throughout the year 2007, as the Community Partnerships Chair, she helped launch The Magnolia Project- a student group and initiative to support victims of Hurricane Katrina through education, advocacy, and service. Valerie enjoys fencing competitively for UC Berkeley’s club team, reading, and laughing.
Douglas Neff (Chair) is a teacher, development coach, and writer with a lifelong passion for youth, education, and culture change. He earned his M.A. in Consciousness Studies from JFK University and his B.A. in Music and Religious Studies from Ithaca College. He has been certified in transformational leadership training and is an Educator for the Eden Alternative, a non-profit committed to creating lasting change in the nursing home industry. He is also an adjunct professor at JFK University, where he teaches a course on culture change in Elder care. Most recently, he founded Toucan Learning Systems, an educational consultancy firm that specializes in breakthrough training and leadership development. He is currently a content developer at Duarte Design, Inc., a graphic design firm specializing in visual representations.
Monica Santos (Secretary) is currently the Director of Coaching Corps at Team-Up for Youth in Oakland, CA. She helped to create their volunteer program, which recruits, trains, and places college students as youth sports coaches in Bay Area community-based organizations. She is a former AmeriCorps member, who ran an after-school tutoring program through the Cal Corps Public Service Center at UC Berkeley. She also directed a school-based mentoring program. She also volunteers as a girls running coach as an elementary school in San Francisco. Monica received her B.A. from UC Berkeley and masters from the Graduate School of Education, University of San Francisco in Organization and Leadership.
Maya Enista has been with Mobilize.org since July 2005. She has worked in both the Washington, D.C. and California offices as the Chief Operating Officer. As of March 3rd, 2008, Maya became the Chief Executive Officer of Mobilize.org, following the departure of Founder and Executive Director David Smith. At 24 years old, Maya is a veteran in the public service sector, beginning her non-profit career 7 years ago. Maya has been active in public service since she was an undergraduate at Rutgers University, focusing mainly on voter empowerment and youth civic engagement. She began her career as the East Coast Coordinator for Rock The Vote at age 17, a position in which she registered over 30,000 young people. Through her work with Rock The Vote, Maya was awarded the first ever Rock The Vote "Rockin' The Street's" award.
Julie Hudash is a devoted child advocate who is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Team Kids, a nonprofit which runs school-based and community-wide service learning programs. Julie invests her time and energy developing and implementing innovative programs to empower young people to take action to improve their communities and world they live in. Under Julie’s leadership, Team Kids has developed powerful partnerships with police and fire firefighters to help implement Team Kids’ school programs. In the past 10 years more than 18,000 students have completed Team Kids month long service programs. Julie is also a writer who tackles difficult issues on behalf of children and has published several pieces in The Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register. Julie is a Graduate of University of Southern California where she majored in Communications and she lives with her husband Ray and their five children in Irvine, CA.
Rev. Charley Hames was born and raised on Chicago’s south side and is the second child of Charley Hames, Sr. and Leona Elizabeth Steadman-Hames (deceased). He was born on January 10, 1974 and baptized as an infant by Bishop Dotcy I. Isom, Jr. (retired) of the Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church. At the appointment of Bishop Henry M. Williamson, Sr., he now serves as pastor of the historic Beebe Memorial Cathedral (BMC), a Christian Methodist Episcopal church in Oakland, California. Under his leadership, the church has received over 500 souls for Christ and has quadrupled its income, helping the church become a healthy and viable part of the community. He has also brought to share in ministry, four gospel recording artists and Christian comedy shows to the Bay Area. Rev. Dr. Hames is married to Felicia S. Brooks-Hames and is the proud father of Charles Jonathon, Elijah Immanuel, and Jael Deon Hames. He is a life-subscribing member of the NAACP and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Francine Redada is the Regional Programs Coordinator for the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation (CECF) in Los Angeles, CA. She received her B.A. at UC Irvine in Asian American Studies and is currently an MA candidate in Asian American Studies at UCLA. After college, Francine spent one year as an AmeriCorps VISTA in the Ethnic Studies Department at San Francisco State University. As a Program Coordinator for the Raza Studies Community Service Learning Program (RSCSL), she connected Raza students with service projects within the Mission District of San Francisco. Currently, through the Educating the Heart School Program at CECF, Francine is responsible for training and providing technical assistance to support the service learning graduation requirement in 10 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) high schools. She works closely with the teachers in implementing, administrating and maintaining high quality service learning curriculum/projects in reflecting the life and values of Cesar E. Chavez.
Adrian Ruiz is one of the co-directors for Sacramento’s Youth Development Network. Adrian Ruiz held the position of Co-director at San Francisco Peer Resources for 5 years before moving to Sacramento and joining the YSPN team in 1994. Over the last three years Adrian has held the position of Lead YDI Trainer and technical advisor for the YSPN. Adrian is a key player in facilitating the community-wide Youth Development Institute (YDI), community learning workshops and the Human Development Institute, all of which have had an instrumental role in expanding the Youth Development concept and strategies throughout the Sacramento region.
