Title:       Cesar E. Chavez Service Club AmeriCorps*VISTA
 
Reports to:    Brian Seilstad, VISTA Coordinator, Cesar E. Chavez Service Clubs

Work Hours:  Full time, temporary (12-month assignment)

Classification:  AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America)


Members receive:

POSITION SUMMARY

Youth Service California (YSCal) Cesar E. Chavez Service Club AmeriCorps*VISTA members will collaborate with parents, teachers, administrators, and local community based organizations to develop and launch dynamic Afterschool Service Clubs honoring the life and legacy of Cesar E. Chavez. This exciting youth leadership program helps middle school students become successfully engaged in their community.

YSCal’s Cesar E. Chavez Initiative is a collaborative effort with the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation and CaliforniaVolunteers. These Service Clubs are being established in 80 middle schools across California. Forty AmeriCorps*VISTA members will each work with two local Clubs. The VISTA members will help train Club staff and volunteers on curriculum materials developed specifically for this initiative. VISTA members will work with Club staff to plan service projects and recruit community volunteers as needed. They will promote the Clubs and develop relationships in the community so that Club members will have appropriate places and resources to perform their service activities.

VISTA members will be supported by the AmeriCorps*VISTA Leader and Program Manager, Cesar E. Chavez Service Clubs. VISTA members will receive extensive, on-going training and support in volunteer management, youth development, youth service, service-learning and Cesar E. Chavez curriculum.  Also, VISTA members will have the unique opportunity to meet and connect with those who have worked with Cesar E. Chavez

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Promote and oversee Service Clubs
  • Guide the Service Club in developing service projects for Cesar E. Chavez Day and National Days of Service, as well as educate the community about the Service Club’s chosen community issue.  Member is responsible for overall event coordination.
  • Take an active role working with school staff in developing relationships on campus and in the community (i.e. community-based organizations, environmental groups, volunteer centers, national service programs, college campuses)
  • Organize at least one annual Service Club recognition event (each student that performs 25 hours of service is eligible for the Governor and First Lady’s Service Award)
  • Assist in developing sustainable funding and support resources for the youth leadership program
  • Assist with other YSCal events as needed

Note: AmeriCorps*VISTA members do not do direct service, they perform indirect service in order to build capacity and sustainability for the program.

 

REQUIRED

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Computer literacy (PC and/or Mac), especially database and web based applications
  • Vehicle, valid drivers license and insurance or public transportation to get to and from school site

PREFERRED

  • Excellent communication skills including public speaking and report writing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience in youth development in an afterschool environment
  • Experience with fundraising and grant writing, or a willingness to learn
  • Experience in event planning and volunteer management (will train)
  • Spanish language skills a plus
